The legality of sports betting largely depends on where in the world you are gambling. While betting sites and online gambling exists around the world, given the accessibility of the Internet, sports betting still has questionable legality in certain countries. Therefore, before you go to an online betting site and begin gambling it is important to understand whether or not you are in an area where it is considered legal.
Many countries around the world allows sports betting and spread betting, but the United States has what is known as the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act 1992, which prohibits sports betting except in certain states where gambling is legal. As far as Europe goes, spread betting and sports betting are generally legal, but are regulated by the government. Opponents of sports betting fear that it threatens the integrity of professional sports, given the fact that there have been numerous occasions over the years where match fixing has occurred. However, proponents of the system show that sports betting and spread betting actually increase fans participation and love for a particular team by allowing them to involve themselves in their ups and downs on a more personal level, rather than just watching a game.
Gambling in Japan is only legal under special provision by the government and while sports betting and lottery tickets are legal, many other forms of betting are not. When in doubt, simply check before you place any bets.
