Betting on NFL or American Football is one of the most popular activities on online bookmakers worldwide. At first though, it can seem confusing to people new to the game, and placing an informed bet is often thought to be far more complex than it actually is. The key, as with any sport, is to know the teams and the game. Once a player is confident in this knowledge, understanding how lines and spreads are presented is easy.
Most bookmakers present American football odds as a betting line or money line. The first thing to understand is that the team with a minus sign in front of their number is the betting favourite. The underdog has a plus sign in front of their number. This may seem like it’s the wrong way round, but the number itself represents what a player can win based on their bet.
The point spread is also typically displayed. In this case not only must the favourite win, but win by enough to “cover the spread” or at least the number of points in the spread. In other words, if the line is Team A -10 -115 and Team B +10 +110, Team A is the sports betting favourite, and they must win by at least 10 points.
