The first version of the gambling slot machine was created in 1887. The odds of winning on a machine were roughly taken from the card-playing game of poker. A machine was devised of three spinning wheels with a total of five symbols. These symbols were chosen as spades, hearts, horseshoes, diamond and the Liberty Bell, which is where the slot machine originally got its name.
The ten cards of poker were replaced with these five symbols and three wheels in place of the five drums. When the right combination of symbols was struck, this allowed for an automatic payout to the winner. Three Liberty bells were declared the biggest winner, which at the time, was ten nickels.
The concept of the Liberty Bell slot machine became incredibly popular, and even though it was eventually banned in the originating state, other states were demanding the machine. In 1907 a new slot machine called the Operator Bell was developed and by 1908, bell machines could easily be found in most saloons and brothels. The original Liberty Bell slot machine can still be viewed at the Liberty Belle Saloon and Restaurant in Reno.
Slot machines have remained one of the more popular forms of gambling to this day. Not only have they flourished into a variety of different games, they seem to have a language of their own as well.
Known as the slot machine in the US, it is referred to the fruit machine in Britain. In Canada, they are simply known as the slots while the Australians call them poker machine or ‘pokies’. Around the world, slot machines are also referred to as the one arm bandit due to the one arm or lever, on the side of the machine that was able to leave its player penniless.
